H2Haul’s Showcase at European Hydrogen Week 2023: Advancing Hydrogen-Powered Transportation for Heavy Duty Vehicles
From November 20th to 24th, H2Haul actively took part in the European Hydrogen Week 2023, held at Brussels Expo. A dynamic 45-minute session was conducted at the Projects Pavilion, offering attendees a comprehensive overview of H2Haul’s initiatives. During this week, project partners IVECO and VDL Special Vehicles seized the opportunity to showcase their state-of-the-art hydrogen-powered heavy-duty trucks. The session’s outreach and dissemination efforts were met with enthusiasm, sparking discussions and debates on the future of hydrogen in the transportation landscape.
Project Session:
ERM, the project coordinator, took the stage to provide a comprehensive overview of the project’s main objectives and to showcase its achievements. The project’s two OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers), Iveco Group and VDL Special Vehicles unveiled their cutting-edge fuel cell trucks developed within H2Haul. Attendees gained valuable insights and learnings from the experiences of these industry leaders. IRU delved into the project’s role in the wider European road haulage landscape, shedding light on its impact and implications for the industry. The session concluded with an engaging question-and-answer segment, allowing attendees to actively participate in the conversation and gain further insights into the project.
Networking at the EU Projects Pavilion
H2Haul took full advantage of the networking opportunities presented during the European Hydrogen Week. Project partners engaged in fruitful discussions with key stakeholders, industry experts, and potential partners.
Showcasing IVECO and VDL’s Hydrogen Trucks
A highlight of H2Haul’s participation was the showcase of hydrogen-powered trucks. Attendees had the opportunity to witness firsthand the zero-emission technology and innovation that H2Haul brings to the clean mobility sector.
“At VDL Special Vehicles, we are committed to a zero-emission future, and the European Hydrogen Week allowed us to illustrate our commitment by showcasing our hydrogen truck as part of the European H2Haul project. We were able to engage with many actors in the hydrogen domain which showed and look back on a successful event”.
Hans Bekkers, Commercial Director, VDL Special Vehicles
“Over twenty years ago, IVECO committed to pioneering innovative solutions for sustainable commercial transport. We believe that the future will be driven by multiple power sources and uses, hydrogen being one of them. That’s why we have invested in accelerating the deployment of this technology in the industry. Our commitment translates into strategic partnerships with global energy providers and membership in associations and projects dedicated to hydrogen, such as H2Haul. These initiatives make us proud of contributing to paving the way for the technical and commercial viability of long-haul hydrogen trucking. IVECO’s participation in Hydrogen Week with the display of our prototype IVECO S-eWay Fuel Cell is a tangible demonstration of the power of bringing together key players in supporting the activation of the sustainable zero-emissions long-haul trucking market”.
Giandomenico Fioretti, Head of Alternative Propulsion Business Development, IVECO

About H2Haul
A total of 16 vehicles will be tested in real-world operations at sites in Belgium, France, Germany, and Switzerland. The innovative hydrogen refuelling stations to be deployed will offer rapid, high-capacity fuelling and thus support the demonstration of how fuel cell trucks can operate as direct replacements for diesel vehicles, with the same driving range and load capacity but with zero emissions. For more information, visit www.h2haul.eu.
The project will run for seven years from 2019, with a minimum of 2 years in operation for the 16 trucks. H2Haul has received funding from the Clean Hydrogen Partnership under grant agreement No 826236. This Joint Undertaking receives support from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme, Hydrogen Europe, and Hydrogen Europe Research.
